The hardest part of buying home-textile fabric isn't the price negotiation — it's that the two sides aren't talking about the same thing. Trade jargon is efficient among insiders and opaque to everyone else.

Here are the parameters most often misread.

1. Yarn count: what "40s" means

In home textiles, "40s" usually equals 40×40 — warp and weft the same count, so only one number is quoted. It's shorthand, not a different spec.

Warp and weft are written separately only when they differ: 21×21, 21×32, 40×60, 60×80. If you see a "×", the two directions differ.

The trap: count describes yarn fineness — it does not directly equal quality. Two fabrics both labelled 100s can differ enormously depending on cotton, weave and finishing. "Higher count = better" is the single most common marketing distortion.

2. Density: how to read 12868

Trade shorthand like 12868 reads as 128×68, in threads per inch — 128 warp, 68 weft.

Density only means something alongside count: at the same count, higher density is tighter and heavier, but higher isn't automatically better — it depends on weave and the intended hand feel.

Industry reality: inflated density figures are common. And note — a test report only proves the sample that was submitted, not that bulk production matches it. Data credibility has to be graded, not reduced to "we have a report."

3. GSM: how heavy the fabric is

Measured in g/m². All-cotton fabric can range from just over 100 to 250+, and the hand, drape and warmth differ completely. Quoting "all cotton" without GSM is quoting nothing.

4. Width: what "240 width" means

Width is how wide the roll is. The trade abbreviates by metre figures:

Trade shorthandActual width
1.5 width150 cm
1.6 width160 cm
2.35 width235 cm
240 width240 cm

Width directly determines cutting efficiency. On the same bedding set, a 20 cm difference in width changes fabric consumption and waste — which is why width belongs on every quotation.

5. Pricing unit: per metre or per kilogram changes the money

Some fabrics are sold by the metre, others by weight — and this must be stated. A quote of ¥15/m against ¥25/kg is uncomparable until you look at the unit.

Broadly: stable, regular fabrics are easier to discuss per metre; heavy or weight-variable fabrics (fleece, for instance) are often per kilogram.

6. Woven vs knit: the category comes first

Fabrics split first into woven and knit, then into construction — because the available options depend on the construction method. You won't find "twill" in a knit, or "jersey" in a woven.

7. Dyeing: reactive and pigment printing are not the same

When quotes differ a lot, ask which method it is before you start negotiating the price down.

8. Names that get confused

9. What to actually ask

BuyingParameters you must pin down
FabricFibre content and ratios, yarn count (or warp×weft), density, GSM, width, weave, dye method, pricing unit (m/kg), MOQ, lead time
Finished bedding setsMaterial, count, density, piece count, dimensions, finish (solid/printed/brushed), filling, packaging
Quilts / duvetsShell material, filling material and weight, total weight, dimensions, finish
Stock lots (extra)Quality grade, known defects (photographed), storage age, batch consistency
