What Bedding Do You Actually Need? A Night-Temperature Chart, Not the Calendar
Most people buy bedding by the calendar — "it's October, time for the winter duvet." That's the wrong variable.
What actually decides how thick your bedding should be is the night-time temperature in your bedroom — not the month, not the solar term, and not the daytime high.
The short version: the primary variable is night-time room temperature. Where central heating is common (northern China, the Nordics), read indoor temperature instead of outdoor temperature.
1. Choosing bedding by night-time temperature
The table below is the mapping used inside the home-textile trade. Note that it is ordered by temperature, not by season.
| Night-time temp. | Suitable bedding |
|---|---|
| Above 30℃ | Summer range (cooling fabrics, silk-like, light quilts) |
| 25 – 29℃ | Summer range + some cotton |
| 20 – 24℃ | Cotton sheet sets / spring-autumn quilts / light brushed cotton / thin blankets |
| 15 – 20℃ | Brushed all-cotton sets / spring-autumn quilts / winter quilts / fleece sets |
| 10 – 15℃ | Fleece sets / brushed all-cotton sets / winter quilts / blankets |
| 5 – 10℃ | Depends on heating: with central heating → cotton sets + winter/spring quilts + thin blanket; without → fleece + brushed + winter quilt + down |
| 0 – 5℃ | Same split by heating (northern China heating starts around November) |
| -5 – 0℃ | Heavy thermal fleece sets / winter quilts / down quilts / thick blankets; in heated rooms, cotton sets + spring quilt |
| Northeast China, summer | Very short — go by actual night temperature, not the calendar |
2. Three mistakes people make
A. Northeast China's summer is the counter-example
Summer there is very short. Stocking by "July means summer" is how inventory gets stranded. Local buyers go by actual night temperature — critical if you plan seasonal purchasing.
B. Heating is not simply "colder in the south, warmer in the north"
China's central-heating line roughly follows the Qinling–Huaihe divide. North of it, indoor temperatures sit around 18–22℃ all winter, so a thinner cotton set plus a spring-autumn quilt is enough. South of it, without central heating, damp cold feels worse — you want fleece, brushed cotton, winter quilts and down.
The intuition "colder north, so pile on more" is actually backwards indoors.
C. Solar terms are a framework; temperature is the trigger
Solar terms tell you roughly which stage of the year you're in. What makes a consumer actually buy is the sudden cold snap. Merchants stock and platforms reprice against the temperature curve, not the almanac.
3. Overseas markets need their own logic
Taking the Chinese table abroad directly will mislead you, because the distribution of heating is completely different from country to country.
| Market | Heating | Read this | Lead with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nordics / Canada / northern Russia | Indoor heating is near-universal | Indoor temp. (~20–22℃) | Mid-weight cotton / light fleece — indoors it isn't cold |
| Northern China | Central heating (Nov–Mar) | Indoor temp. | Cotton set + spring-autumn quilt is enough |
| Southern China / Southern Europe | No central heating | Outdoor night temp. | Fleece / brushed cotton / winter quilt / down |
| Middle East / Africa / SE Asia | No heating concept | Outdoor temp. | By actual temp: hot → cooling fabrics; cold → fleece |
Key point: don't assume "the north always has heating" or "the Nordics are always cold indoors." The temperature framework is universal; whether heating exists has to be checked market by market.
4. Why this matters commercially
New-season product has a fixed calendar, but in-stock inventory sells on weather windows. A batch of winter quilts that misses the cold snap has to wait for the next one. Conversely, filling the gap between new-season launches with off-season stock is a standard play in the inventory business.
It's also why organising supply by temperature rather than by calendar often beats simply comparing prices — the same fleece set is a completely different proposition in a region that has already turned cold versus one still at 28℃.
